Reading a spec sheet
The clear layer on top. It is the only part of the floor that takes wear, measured in mils, or thousandths of an inch. Entry vinyl runs 6 to 12 mil. Every Terlano plank collection is 20 mil.
The plank itself, not counting the pad. Ours is measured at 8 mm before the attached pad is added. Some brands quote a total that includes the pad, so an 8 mm floor from one brand can be a 6.5 mm board from another. Ask which one you are being quoted.
The foam already bonded to the underside. It handles sound and small subfloor variation. Standard is 1.5 mm. Our Quiet Core line runs 5 mm.
How the planks join. Unilin is a licensed system with real patents behind it and it is what most premium floors use. Generic clones exist, and they are the usual reason a floor separates at the seams two years in.
